good thing i'm not really a burglar.....

My boss and her family are out of town and they dropped their dog off at the vet on Friday, because she had cut her paw. They're not coming home until tomorrow, so my boss asked me if I would get their dog and take her home today. I picked her up from the vet this afternoon, took her home, and went inside to leave the medicine on the counter. My boss forgot to mention that the alarm was set and I had forgotten the code (she had given it to me a long time ago when I house sat for them). I called my boss, she didn't answer, so I called her husband, but by the time I got him and got the code, of course the police were already on there way.

The cop gets there and I tell her what happened and all she did was ask me for my name. I offered to show her my drivers license and asked if she needed me to call my boss or her husband so she could call and verify my story, and she said that no, she just needed my name for her report. While I'm very thankful that she didn't want to arrest me, I guess she didn't realize that I could have just given her a fake name.

Seriously.
One time I was housesitting for just a day trip at a couple's house. I had housesat for them before when they were on weeklong vacations, but this particular time they said they weren't going to set the alarm. They just wanted me to drop by once and let out their dog. When I got there and opened the garage and entered the house the alarm went off. VERY LOUDLY of course. They had changed the code since the last time I was there and so I had no idea what to do. I called them - no luck. By this time the security company was calling and MIRACULOUSLY I remembered the code word. I explained the situation and they turned the alarm off, but not before the police showed up. I was mortified. Come to find out, the wife's meddling parents had come by the house while they were gone and when they left they turned on the alarm system, not knowing I was on my way. I was pissed.

Um, yikes. That makes me feel kind of unsafe. I mean, yay for you avoiding central booking and all, but what's the point of your boss even having the alarm?

Cops have an uncanny way of telling if someone is lying to them....I would know, it's what my DH does for a living.

I'm still glad they didn't haul you away in cuffs!!
